This project explores which possibilities exist to redirect chemical industry from its current petrochemical feedstock to renewable resources. It presents an overview of the full range of approaches to manufacturing chemicals and chemical products on a renewable basis. An up-to-date and transparent comparison of the various poten-tial uses for biomass is performed, including their relevance to markets and emis-sions. In addition also the demand side (need, consumer acceptance) and macro-economic impacts are explored. Finally, options for action are developed, based on an assessment of the relevant framework conditions and influencing factors affect-ing future use and the relative importance of industrial and energy use.
