Include employees for advice

– a prevention project on technology in eldercare

New technology supports more and more work areas of eldercare. The new tools are meant to increase the citizens’ wellbeing and decrease physical attrition of the employees. Digital technologies are to promote efficiency and the quality of work organization and execution. However, implementation of new technology is not a process without side effects. Several studies indicate that employees’ experiences with new technologies are mixed and in some cases even perceived as barriers to meaningful organization and execution of the work. Such experiences can lead to failure and progressive mental deterioration.

This problem led to the prevention project Include employees for advice. The project wanted to counter and prevent failure and mental deterioration in connection with the introduction of new technologies in the elderly care by testing and developing methods to involve the employees.

The reason for focusing on inclusion in the project was that a number of research and development projects pointed out that there is a positive relationship between including the employees and prevention.

Include employees for advice was conducted over a period of two years and sought to contribute with concrete, suitable methods of employee involvement in discussion and decision making about new technologies in the care work. It was a success criterion that the methods could appeal broadly and potentially engage the entire target group. Overall, the project was to help create a more involvement oriented organizational culture.

The project was conducted in collaboration with the elderly care respectively in Høje-Taastrup and Næstved Municipality and the project activities’ target group was mainly the elderly care health and social care staff. The Fund for Better Working Environment and Labour Retention financed the project while Jacob Skjødt Nielsen, former Project Manager at The Danish Board of Technology was responsible for the management.

The methodological work was led in collaboration with Ida-Elisabeth Andersen, former Project Manager at The Danish Board of Technology, Kirsten Juul Andersen, psychologist from the Travel scene and Janne Gleerup, PhD and researcher at Roskilde University. The organizational and administrative work was undertaken in collaboration with the elderly care in Høje-Taastrup and Næstved Municipality.
