Hearing on coexistence between GM crops and non-GM crops

The hearing took place on the 11th of May at Christiansborg from 9h00-16h30 and it should be seen in connection with the reading of the bill on co-existence, which is expected to pass before summer.

Within short time genetically modified (GM) crops will be cultivated in Denmark. That is the consequence of the proposed amendment that the EU-parliament passed in the summer 2003. EU has during the recent years refused GM crops but has decided that it is possible again to get approval for cultivation and marketing of GM crops in EU and with that in Denmark.

One of the controversial questions according to cultivation of GM crops on Danish fields is the risk of dispersal to conventional and organic crops. EU-regulation does not include cultivation of GM crops or handling of dispersal. Regulation of cultivation of GM crops is left to the member states, including Denmark.

In the light of that the Danish parliament is reading a bill on co-existence between genetically modified crops and conventional and organic crops. The law shall regulate cultivation of GM crops so that risk of dispersal is at a minimum but still secure the organic farmers compensation in case of dispersal. However experts have not come to an agreement on how co-existence is handled, how dispersal is prevented – and if it can be prevented at all – or what should be compensated in case of dispersal.

Therefore the Parliamentary Subcommittee on Food, Agriculture and Fisheries has wished for a hearing on the experiences with cultivating GM crops. The hearing took place on the 11th of May at Christiansborg from 9h00-16h30 and it should be seen in connexion with the reading of the bill on co-existence, which is expected to pass before summer.
