A Sustainable Danish Transport System

What does it take to steer the Danish transport system in a sustainable direction?
We can expect a future world were shortage of oil and demands for reducing emissions of climate gasses will force us to introduce other forms of energy, also in the transport sector. Today the transport sector depends almost solely on fossil fuels and they account for approximately a third of the Danish CO2 emissions – which is expected to increase. This project intends to examine the possibilities for the transport sector to change to sustainable energy, and furthermore what implications it has on every day life and society.

In 2010-2011 the Danish Board of Technology realized a project focusing on the potential of a sustainable Danish transport system. The project was made in collaboration with a group of experts and stakeholders from the transport sector. The idea was to evaluate what it will take – in terms of technology, organisation and planning – for the transport system to alter to a 100% renewable energy (RE), and what the consequences are for everyday life of the citizens, the welfare and the society as a hole.

The project used scenario calculations to investigate the potential to transform the transport sector to be 100 % RE based. The scenarios are based on how much mobility that can be achieved through a certain amount of energy that will be available for the transport sector. The amount of biomass is limited to the amount that can be produced in Denmark. Besides this, there is a wish that the transformation has to be economically and that the mobility shouldn’t be reduced.

The project aimed at identifying which decisions and activities are necessary on a short and medium term to convert the transport sector to RE in 2050. This was done in dialogue with stakeholders and politicians.
